Hand-made American 'Character' Dolls.
I have always been an avid collector of 'Black Americana', but I was unable to find any authentic antique dolls. I carefully researched the subject and, in 1983, made my first dolls.
I toured many Californian craft shows and was amazed at how quickly they sold. Most were bought by black women who recognised them for their historical interest.
This type of doll was made by the slave-era mammies from bits and pieces of 'found' materials. Their faces were rough and generally reflected their maker's life.
Some had happy faces, many had very sad ones.
My dolls are genuine American folk art and have been displayed in a number of galleries and museums, as well as featuring in American publications. They are all 22" tall and come with a name tag.

Because I make each one individually by hand, no two can be exactly the same; however you can specify the colours of your doll's clothing.
Too date, I have made well over 1000 individual dolls and they have found homes all over the world.
